Kickstart your adventure with a scenic mountain drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung, winding through pine forests, riverside bends, and hidden hamlets. Expect plenty of tea stops, and if you’re lucky, a peek at snow-covered peaks on the way.
✅ Travel Tip: Start early (before 6 AM) to avoid traffic near Srinagar and Karnaprayag.
Lohajung is more than just a base camp — it’s a peaceful village with legendary roots. Locals say this is where Goddess Parvati fought Lohasur, giving Lohajung its name: “Loha” (demon) + “jung” (battle).
Trek Begins: Wan to Gehroli Patal via Latu Devta Temple

Your trek officially begins from Wan, the last motorable village. After passing the sacred Latu Devta Temple, a steep ascent leads to Ranaka Dhar, where you’ll catch your first wide-angle views of the valley.
Soon, you descend to the Neel Ganga River, a photogenic rest spot with icy blue waters. Post this, a steady forest climb delivers you to Gehroli Patal, your campsite under a canopy of oaks and rhododendrons.

Gehroli to Abin Kharak via Bedni Bugyal

Today is a trekker’s delight. You ascend out of forest cover and step into Bedni Bugyal, a postcard-perfect alpine meadow. Here lies Bedni Kund, a high-altitude sacred lake believed to be visited by Goddess Nanda Devi herself.
After a short climb to Bedni Top, you’re rewarded with face-to-face views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. From there, descend toward Ali Bugyal, where wild horses graze freely on rolling hills.
Your camp, Abin Kharak, is nestled beside a ridge — quiet, surreal, and starry at night.
Abin Kharak to Didna: Through Endless Forest Trails
- Trek: 9.3 km | 6 hours
- Descent: 11,145 ft → 8,150 ft
- Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Begin with a gentle descent across high meadows with views of the Chaukhamba range in the distance. Midway, you’ll cross Tolpani, a seasonal shepherd hut village — a good spot for a quick tea if the locals are around.
The trail then dives into thick forests, with centuries-old oaks and rhododendrons covering the path in red and brown. You’ll reach Didna Village, a remote yet lively settlement with terraced fields and Himalayan charm.
Didna to Kulling & Drive Back to Lohajung
- Trek: 6 km | 4–5 hours
- Descent: 8,150 ft → 7,550 ft
- Drive: Kulling to Lohajung
The trail from Didna drops steeply to the Ramganga River, followed by an optional two-route climb to Kulling — choose between a steep shortcut or a gradual forest trail.
From Kulling, a short drive brings you back to Lohajung. Celebrate the trek with a warm meal and watch the sunset over the peaks one last time.
Lohajung to Rishikesh: Farewell to the Himalayas
