Why choose Traill's pass expedition?
Choosing the Traill’s Pass Expedition is not for the faint-hearted, it is a calling for those seeking the ultimate test of human endurance and the purest form of Himalayan beauty. Regarded as one of the most challenging high-altitude treks in India, this journey goes far beyond regular hiking, it is a profound transition between two completely contrasting worlds. Before the technical ice climbs begin, your journey takes you through the warm, untouched heart of Kumaoni culture. You will walk through ancient, stone-slated villages like Khati, trek alongside the roaring Pindar River, and cross vibrant rhododendron forests and lush alpine meadows.
But as the green valleys fade, a pure, extreme mountaineering experience in Uttarakhand takes over. You will navigate the massive, fractured crevasses of the Pindari Glacier and camp beneath the imposing shadow of the isolated Nanda Devi East.
If you are tired of crowded commercial trails and want to conquer a legendary 5,312-meter crossover from Bageshwar to Munsyari, this untouched alpine wilderness offers a raw, life-changing adventure that very few dare to complete.

No, absolutely not. Traill’s Pass is a highly technical and extreme mountaineering expedition, not a regular trekking route. It requires walking on massive glaciers, climbing 60 to 70-degree vertical ice walls, and navigating deep crevasses. You must have prior high-altitude trekking experience (at least 4,500m+) and excellent physical endurance.
While a BMC or AMC certification is highly recommended, it is not strictly mandatory if you are in peak physical condition and quick to learn. Our highly experienced technical guides will brief you on basic ice-craft, using crampons, ice axes, and ascenders/descenders (Jumar) at the Advance Base Camp.
The standard 10-day itinerary is designed as a semi-alpine style push, meaning climbers are expected to carry their personal gear. However, recognizing the extreme difficulty of the terrain, you can hire an optional High-Altitude Porter (HAP) for an additional ₹1,800 per day to carry your main rucksack (up to 15 kg). You will only need to carry your daypack with essentials.
The expedition is strictly seasonal due to extreme weather and glacier conditions. The best windows are pre-monsoon (mid-May to late June) and post-monsoon (September to mid-October). Winter and monsoon months are highly dangerous and closed for this route.
You will lose mobile network completely after Khati village (Day 1/Day 2). From Dwali all the way to Martoli (Day 9), you will be in a complete zero-civilization zone. Please inform your family about your restricted connectivity before starting the trek.
Safety is our top priority. Our expedition leaders carry customized first-aid kits and emergency oxygen cylinders. However, due to the extreme terrain, helicopter rescues are highly dependent on weather conditions. It is mandatory for every participant to have high-altitude mountaineering insurance that covers emergency helicopter evacuation above 5,000 meters.
Group equipment like fixed ropes, snow stakes, and ice screws are included in the package. However, personal technical gear (Scarpa mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, seat harness, carabiners, helmet, etc.) must be rented separately. We provide high-quality rental gear on a per-day basis to ensure you have the best equipment for the ice walls.
