The mountains do not forgive unpreparedness. Whether you are stepping on a trail for the first time or heading into your tenth Himalayan expedition, the gear you carry can be the difference between an unforgettable experience and a dangerous one.

At Hike in India, we have spent years on these trails from the gentle meadows to the extreme ridges. We know exactly what works, what fails and what you can leave behind.

This Trek Gear Guide is built from real trail experience, not just product listings. Browse through our carefully selected categories below, each with honest recommendations, buying tips and direct links to quality gear.

What Trekking Gear you'll need

Pick your category and gear up the right way.

The non-negotiables. Everything your backpack must have before you hit the trail.

The right backpack changes everything. Find your perfect fit for day hikes to multi-day treks.

Choose the right footwear for every adventure, from easy hikes to challenging Himalayan treks.

What to Skip - Common Mistakes (Do not carry these)

  • Cotton clothes – cotton absorbs moisture and takes forever to dry, dangerous in cold and wet conditions
  • Denim jeans – heavy, restrictive, takes days to dry
  • Too many clothes – most trekkers overpack clothing, 2-3 sets of quick dry clothes are enough for any trek
  • Full size toiletries – decant into small travel bottles
  • Laptop or heavy electronics – leave them at home
  • Glass bottles – heavy and breakable

Pro Tips

  • Pack your bag the night before, never the morning of your trek
  • Heaviest items go closest to your back and near the top of your pack
  • Waterproof your bag contents using dry bags or simple plastic bags inside
  • Break in your trekking shoes at least 2-3 weeks before your trek, never wear brand new shoes on day one
  • Keep your headlamp, snacks, water and rain cover accessible in the top pocket, not buried inside
